What should you know about frequent common cold?

A cold can cause a blocked nose, sore throat, cough, and tiredness, then improve gradually. One infection may be followed by another before you feel fully recovered. A cough or blocked nose that lingers, symptoms that worsen after initial improvement, or new ear pain may need a different explanation, such as acute bronchitis, sinusitis, or a middle ear infection. In young children, a harsh cough or noisy breathing needs particular attention because croup can affect the upper airway.

Record when each episode starts, which symptoms come first, fever, exposure to illness, and whether recovery occurs between episodes. This gives a clinician a clearer pattern.

Rest, drink enough fluid to keep urine pale, and use simple comfort measures such as warm drinks or saline for a blocked nose. Wash hands and improve ventilation around others. Avoid cigarette smoke. Antibiotics do not treat ordinary viral colds, so ask a clinician before using them. A pharmacist can advise on suitable symptom relief when you have other medicines or health conditions.

Arrange an appointment if episodes are unusually close together, symptoms are not improving, or cough, earache, or facial pain persists. Seek urgent care for difficulty breathing, blue lips, severe drowsiness, dehydration, or a child making a high-pitched breathing noise at rest.
