What should you know about freckles and sun?

Freckles, or ephelides, are pigment spots that often become more visible after ultraviolet exposure. Sunlight stimulates pigment production in the skin, so existing freckles may deepen during bright seasons and become less obvious when exposure falls. They are usually flat and may be scattered across the face, shoulders, arms or upper chest.

A freckle is not the same as every sun-related brown mark. Age, medicines, inflammation and other skin conditions can create similar colour changes. Looking at a spot over time is useful, but a clinician should assess a mark that differs from your other spots or changes in a concerning way.

Apply broad-spectrum sunscreen to exposed skin and reapply as directed on the product label, particularly after sweating or swimming. Combine it with a hat, sunglasses, clothing that covers the skin and shade. Avoid tanning beds and intentional tanning, which can intensify pigment and add ultraviolet injury.

If freckles remain a cosmetic concern, a clinician can discuss options after examining them.
