Foot Skin Cracking: What to Know

Short answer
Foot skin cracking often reflects dry, thickened, or inflamed skin, and regular moisturising plus treatment of the underlying cause can help the fissures heal.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.
At a glance
- Best timing
- Moisturiser works well after washing, when the skin has been patted dry but is not fully dry.
- Protect
- Cover a painful fissure with a clean dressing and reduce rubbing until it closes.
Why cracks form
Fissures develop when stiff or dehydrated skin cannot flex comfortably, especially around the heel or pressure points. Friction, frequent washing, dry air, and open footwear may contribute. Atopic dermatitis can cause itch and inflammation, while psoriasis may produce thick scale that splits. Pain can come from the crack itself, and broken skin provides an entry point for infection; the presence of a fissure does not identify its cause.
Protect the area
Clean gently, pat dry, and apply a thick fragrance-free moisturiser while the skin is slightly damp. Emollient therapy can soften scale and support the skin barrier. Wear well-fitting shoes and cushioned socks, and avoid picking, sharp blades, and vigorous filing over an open fissure. If cracks recur despite consistent care, a clinician can assess for eczema, psoriasis, infection, or another contributor and choose a suitable prescription.
When to seek care
Arrange an assessment for deep, bleeding, very painful, or repeatedly infected cracks. Get prompt help if warmth, spreading redness, swelling, pus, fever, or red streaking develops. A crack that prevents normal walking, or one that does not improve with careful moisturising, needs a closer look.
Questions for your doctor
Is the cracking caused by dryness, eczema, psoriasis, or infection? Which emollient and dressing suit the fissure? Should I change footwear or foot-care habits? What should I do if it bleeds?

Questions people ask
Can I file cracked heel skin?
Gentle filing may help thick intact skin, but avoid tools on bleeding, painful, inflamed, or open areas.
What if moisturiser stings?
Stop using it on the open area and ask a clinician or pharmacist about a simpler barrier product.
