Foods to Eat for Hair Loss

Short answer
Eating varied meals with enough protein and key nutrients may support hair health, but diet cannot replace diagnosis and treatment for every type of hair loss.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.
At a glance
- Meal focus
- Adequate protein and varied whole foods
- Supplement rule
- Use targeted advice rather than a broad stack
- Seek review
- Rapid loss, patches, scale, or scalp pain
What diet can and cannot do
Hair production depends on adequate energy, protein, and nutrients such as iron and zinc. A diet lacking these can add to shedding, particularly after major dietary restriction or illness. However, Male Pattern Hair Loss, Female Pattern Hair Loss, Alopecia Areata, scalp ringworm, and traction alopecia have different mechanisms. Telogen Effluvium may follow a trigger even when current meals are nutritious. Food is therefore one part of hair care, not a way to identify the diagnosis from appearance alone.
Choose a balanced eating pattern
Build meals around protein foods such as lentils, beans, eggs, yoghurt, fish, poultry, or tofu, then add vegetables, fruit, whole grains, nuts, and seeds when appropriate. Include iron-containing foods and discuss plant-based choices with a clinician if shedding is new. Avoid starting several supplements together; excess vitamin or mineral intake can worsen hair problems or obscure the reason for shedding. Note changes in density, part width, patches, scalp symptoms, recent illness, stress, and hair tension so an assessment has useful context.
When to arrange an assessment
Book a medical review for rapid or unexplained loss, visible patches, scalp inflammation, scaling, tenderness, or broken hairs. Prompt attention is useful when loss accompanies marked fatigue, changes in periods, weight change, or a new medicine. A clinician can distinguish shedding from follicle disease and decide whether examination or targeted testing is needed.
Questions for your doctor
What pattern of hair loss do you see? Could my diet or a nutrient deficiency contribute? Which tests are appropriate before taking supplements? Should I change hair styling or discuss medical treatments?

Questions people ask
Will a healthy diet regrow hair in every case?
No. Nutrition can support follicles, while inherited, autoimmune, infectious, and traction-related loss may need specific treatment.
Which food is best for hair loss?
There is no single best food; a varied pattern that supplies protein and nutrients is more useful than relying on one ingredient.
