Short answer

With gout, commonly limited choices include organ meats, some seafood, alcohol and sugary drinks, while a balanced diet remains possible.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

Why these foods are limited

Gout is an inflammatory joint condition caused by urate crystals. Purines from food are converted into uric acid, and the kidneys help remove it. Organ meats and certain seafood contain concentrated purines. Beer and spirits may affect urate handling, and sugary drinks can increase uric acid production. Not every person responds to the same food, so a broad list of forbidden foods can create unnecessary restriction. The goal is a sustainable pattern that supports treatment.

Make changes without guesswork

Reduce organ meats, meat extracts, anchovies, sardines, shellfish, beer, spirits and drinks with added sugar. Choose vegetables, whole grains, water, suitable low-fat dairy and balanced protein portions more often. Do not replace a restricted food with unplanned fasting. Check labels on sweetened drinks and keep a diary of meals, alcohol and symptoms. If you have Chronic Kidney Disease or Obesity, ask for an eating plan that accounts for those conditions and your medicines.

When to seek help

Seek prompt medical care for a first hot, red and swollen joint, especially with fever. Urgent assessment is needed if severe joint pain prevents walking or swelling progresses quickly, since infection and other conditions can resemble gout. Persistent ankle swelling, knee pain or joint swelling should be evaluated rather than attributed to food. Recurrent attacks may mean your longer-term treatment needs review.

Questions for your doctor

Which foods are most relevant to my own flare pattern? Can I drink alcohol with my medicines? How much fluid is appropriate for me? Do I need treatment to prevent further attacks?

Questions people ask

Must I remove every high-purine food?

No. The useful limits depend on your health, medicines and symptoms; a clinician can help you avoid overly restrictive eating.

Can food cause a swollen joint?

Food may contribute to a gout flare in some people, but a new swollen joint needs assessment because several conditions can cause it.
