Foods for hair breakage

Short answer
No food repairs a snapped hair fibre, but adequate protein and a varied diet support stronger new hair while gentle care limits further breakage.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.
At a glance
- Most useful change
- Reduce heat, chemical stress, friction, and pulling.
- Food focus
- Regular protein-containing, varied meals.
- Remember
- Food cannot repair an already split hair fibre.
Breakage is different from shedding
Breakage happens along the hair shaft, leaving shorter pieces, split ends, rough texture, or uneven length. Shedding releases a complete hair from the root. Dryness, repeated heat, bleaching, chemical processing, tight styles, brushing while wet, and friction can weaken the shaft. Food matters when poor intake or deficiency reduces the quality of new growth, but changing meals cannot fuse split ends.
Traction Alopecia can begin with repeated pulling and may eventually affect follicle growth. Scalp Ringworm can cause scale and broken hairs and needs medical treatment rather than dietary changes.
Protect the hair you have
Eat regular meals with protein from foods such as eggs, fish, yoghurt, beans, lentils, nuts, or seeds, plus vegetables and whole grains. Use conditioner, detangle gently from the ends, reduce high heat, and loosen styles that pull. Trim visibly split ends if desired, but do not expect trimming to change the follicle. Avoid unneeded high-dose supplements unless a clinician has identified a reason.
When to arrange a scalp review
Seek assessment if breakage is accompanied by scalp pain, itch, scale, redness, round patches, or sudden thinning. Review is also sensible when hair continues to snap despite gentler care, or when tight styles have caused tenderness. Prompt treatment can limit damage from infection or ongoing traction.
Questions for your doctor
Ask whether the short hairs represent shaft breakage or root-level loss, whether the scalp shows infection or traction, and whether diet testing is warranted.

Questions people ask
Can a special food repair split ends?
No. Food supports new growth, while conditioning and trimming address existing shaft damage.
Is hair breakage always a nutrition problem?
No. Styling, heat, chemicals, friction, traction, and scalp conditions are common contributors.
