Folliculitis under the nose: what to know

The area may look like tiny red or white-headed spots clustered around nose hairs. It can feel tender, itchy, raw or crusted. Friction from tissues, frequent touching, hair removal, sweat and heavy products can damage the follicle opening. An ingrown hair can create a similar bump, so appearance alone cannot identify the cause. Avoid squeezing because pressure can drive inflammation deeper and leave a mark.

Clean gently with lukewarm water and a mild cleanser, then pat dry. Pause shaving, plucking and fragranced products on the area until it settles. A warm, clean compress may soften crusting and ease tenderness; use a fresh cloth each time. Do not share towels or razors. A clinician may recommend topical treatment when infection is suspected, or another approach when irritation or an ingrown hair is the driver.

Arrange medical advice if the redness spreads, pain becomes marked, swelling involves the nose or face, pus keeps returning, or the skin does not start improving with gentle care. Seek urgent help for fever, rapidly increasing facial swelling, severe headache, eye swelling or vision changes. These features need prompt assessment rather than home treatment.

Ask whether the bumps fit folliculitis, an ingrown hair or another skin condition; whether a swab or examination is useful; which products and hair-removal methods to pause; and how to prevent repeated irritation around the nostrils.
