What should you know about folliculitis red bumps?

The bumps may be smooth or have a tiny central pustule. They can be itchy, sore, or sensitive after shaving and are common where sweat, rubbing, or hair removal irritates follicles. Ingrown hairs can create a similar appearance. Folliculitis is a condition that presents with red bumps; a red bump by itself does not establish the diagnosis. Location, timing, and whether the spots recur help a clinician assess the cause.

Clean the area gently and avoid scrubbing, picking, or squeezing. Stop shaving or waxing temporarily, use fresh blades when you resume, and avoid sharing grooming tools. Loose clothing can reduce rubbing on the body. On the face or scalp, choose non-greasy products and rinse sweat away. If examination suggests infection, a clinician may prescribe a topical treatment or oral antibiotics; treatment should match the cause rather than the colour of the bump.

Seek assessment if redness is spreading, pain is increasing, bumps are deep, or the area is producing substantial drainage. Prompt care is appropriate with fever, rapidly developing swelling, or a red streak. Recurrent bumps, scarring, or scalp involvement also deserve review because another condition may need different care.

Ask whether the pattern fits folliculitis, ingrown hairs, or acne; whether grooming should change; and what warning signs mean you should return. Tell the clinician where the bumps started, how quickly they appeared, and what products or hair-removal methods preceded them.
