Folliculitis and pubic bumps: what to know

Folliculitis affects hair follicles and may produce red bumps, pustules, soreness, or itch. Shaving, waxing, tight underwear, sweating, and rubbing can irritate the area; ingrown hairs may create a similar pattern. A cyst, contact reaction, or sexually transmitted infection can also resemble a pimple, so do not diagnose from appearance alone.

Avoid squeezing or repeatedly checking the area. Broken skin is more vulnerable to irritation and secondary infection. A clinician can examine the bumps privately and recommend testing when the history or appearance calls for it.

Pause shaving, waxing, and depilatory products until the skin is calm. Wash gently, rinse away sweat, pat dry, and choose loose breathable underwear. Avoid fragranced washes, antiseptics, and abrasive scrubs on genital skin. Do not share razors or towels, and keep personal grooming tools clean.

If the bumps are bacterial folliculitis, a clinician may prescribe a topical medicine or oral antibiotic. Use only the recommended product and keep it away from internal genital surfaces unless specifically instructed.

Arrange a review if bumps persist, recur, become deep or painful, drain, scar, or do not improve after stopping hair removal. Seek prompt care for fever, rapidly spreading redness, severe swelling, painful urination, blisters, ulcers, or new genital lesions after sexual contact. These features can point beyond folliculitis and should not be treated by trial and error.
