Folliculitis on the head: what to know

Sweat, heat, friction from hats or helmets, close clipping, and occlusive hair products can irritate scalp follicles. Bacteria or yeast may contribute. Scalp folliculitis can be confused with dandruff-related inflammation, acne-like bumps, insect bites, or other scalp disorders, so the pattern and symptoms matter.

Itching, tenderness, crusting, drainage, and bumps that surround individual hairs are useful observations. Avoid picking because broken skin can become more inflamed and may leave marks or small scars.

Wash the scalp gently after sweating and rinse shampoo or styling products thoroughly. Keep hats, helmet liners, brushes, and pillowcases clean, and avoid sharing combs or headwear. Pause close shaving or clipping over the affected area and reduce heavy oils or gels. A clinician may recommend a targeted topical treatment or oral antibiotics when infection is suspected; the correct option depends on the examination.

Arrange prompt care if pain, swelling, warmth, crusting, or drainage is increasing, or if fever develops. Seek dermatology advice for spreading lesions, repeated flares, scarring, or hair loss. A painful swollen area or rapidly worsening symptoms should be assessed without delay because deeper inflammation may need treatment.

Ask whether the scalp findings are folliculitis or another condition, whether a product or head covering is contributing, which washing routine is suitable, and whether clipping or shaving should be paused longer.
