Folliculitis after swimming in a pool

How the structures involved in Folliculitis differ from normal

Short answer

Folliculitis after swimming can follow exposure to contaminated water, especially when wet swimwear keeps bacteria against the skin and follicles.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

At a glance

Possible setting
Bumps under or around areas covered by wet swimwear
First measure
Change, rinse, wash gently, and dry thoroughly
Avoid
Squeezing bumps or sharing towels

What may be happening

An itchy or tender crop of red bumps may appear under a swimsuit or on areas covered by wet fabric. Pool-associated folliculitis is different from simple chlorine irritation, although both can cause redness. The timing, distribution, and whether bumps contain pus help a clinician assess the cause. Ingrown Hairs or other Skin Bumps may look alike, so do not assume every post-swim rash is an infection.

After swimming

Remove wet swimwear promptly, rinse the skin with clean water, and wash gently before drying thoroughly. Launder the swimsuit and avoid sharing towels or razors. Keep irritated skin cool and avoid scratching, shaving, or squeezing bumps. Do not apply antibiotics without advice. If the eruption persists or is spreading, a clinician can decide whether Topical Antibiotic Therapy or another treatment is suitable.

When to seek care

Arrange an examination if redness expands, pain increases, bumps become large or pus-filled, or you develop fever or feel unwell. Seek advice sooner if several people who used the same pool develop a similar rash, or if you have a condition or medicine that affects immune function. Antibiotics For Skin Infection may be needed in selected cases, but treatment depends on the findings.

Questions for your doctor

Ask whether the rash resembles Folliculitis or chlorine irritation, whether you should avoid the pool temporarily, and how to clean or treat the skin. Share when you swam, how long the swimsuit stayed wet, and whether the bumps itch, hurt, or drain.

Questions people ask

Can a swimming pool cause folliculitis?

Yes. Water exposure and prolonged contact with wet swimwear can allow follicle irritation or bacterial folliculitis to develop.

When should I stop swimming with a pool rash?

Avoid swimming while the rash is worsening, draining, or not yet assessed, and ask a clinician when it is reasonable to return.
