What should you know about folliculitis down there?

The outer, hair-bearing skin can develop small red, dark, itchy, or tender bumps around hairs. Some spots contain pus or develop a crust. Shaving, waxing, close-fitting underwear, exercise, moisture, and repeated rubbing can irritate follicles. Ingrown hairs can create a similar appearance. Folliculitis on hair-bearing skin is different from sores on moist genital tissue, discharge, or a rash caused by an allergy, so location and symptoms matter.

A bump in this area is not automatically a sexually transmitted infection, but new sores, blisters, ulcers, or symptoms after sexual contact deserve a clinician's assessment. Avoid trying to diagnose the cause by appearance alone.

Stop shaving or waxing until the skin has recovered. Rinse gently, keep the area dry, change out of damp clothing, and choose loose breathable underwear. Do not squeeze bumps or apply fragranced products, strong scrubs, or unprescribed antibiotics to sensitive skin. A clinician can recommend suitable treatment after checking whether the problem is folliculitis, ingrown hair, contact irritation, or another condition.

Arrange an appointment for persistent, recurrent, spreading, draining, or scar-forming bumps. Seek prompt care for fever, severe pain, rapidly increasing swelling, spreading warmth or redness, red streaks, or difficulty passing urine. New blisters, ulcers, unusual discharge, or significant genital pain also need timely evaluation.

Ask whether hair removal or friction is contributing, whether testing for infection is appropriate, and which products are safe for the area. Ask when shaving can resume and what warning signs should prompt a return visit.
