Can folliculitis spread?

The condition starts around hair follicles and may appear as groups of red, tender, itchy, or pus-filled bumps. New spots can develop beside the original area when friction or shaving continues. Bacterial folliculitis may also pass through close skin contact, shared towels, razors, or clothing. Other forms are driven by yeast or inflammation and are not spread in the same way. A wider patch does not by itself show which cause is responsible.

Wash the affected skin gently, pat it dry, and avoid picking or squeezing bumps. Pause shaving, waxing, and tight clothing over the area until it settles. Use a clean towel and do not share razors, washcloths, or clothing. Change out of sweaty clothes and wash items that touch the area. A clinician can decide whether you need topical treatment, an oral medicine, or a different approach after examining the bumps.

Arrange medical assessment if redness is rapidly enlarging, pain is increasing, pus is extensive, or the skin feels hot and swollen. Seek prompt help for fever, chills, marked weakness, or red streaks. Care is also sensible when the rash keeps returning, involves the scalp or a large area, or does not improve after self-care. These features can point to a deeper infection or another skin condition.
