Short answer

Focal cellulitis is a localized bacterial infection causing a tender, warm, red, swollen area that needs prompt medical assessment.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

What it means

Cellulitis affects deeper layers of skin and tissue, often after a small cut, bite, crack, wound, or skin condition allows bacteria through. The area may feel hot, painful, tight, and swollen; the border can expand over time. It commonly affects a leg, arm, or face, but it can occur anywhere.

Athlete's foot, eczema, surgery, or poor circulation can create openings or make infection harder to control. Type 2 diabetes can also affect wound healing and deserves mention during assessment. A clinician may mark the edge to track whether redness is spreading.

What to do now

Arrange same-day medical advice for a new, painful, warm, spreading red patch or swelling. Treatment commonly involves prescription antibiotics selected for the suspected bacteria and site; take them exactly as directed and do not share leftover medicine. Keep the area clean, protect any break in the skin, rest the affected limb, and raise it when practical.

Do not squeeze a blister or use harsh antiseptics without guidance. Tell the clinician about allergies, diabetes, immune conditions, recent procedures, and any medicine already taken.

When to seek urgent help

Go to urgent care for rapidly spreading redness, severe pain, red streaks, pus, skin turning dusky, or a high fever. Emergency help is needed for confusion, faintness, difficulty breathing, extreme weakness, or feeling suddenly very unwell, because these can accompany sepsis. Facial or eye-area swelling also warrants urgent assessment.

Questions for your doctor

Ask what may have allowed bacteria into the skin, how soon improvement should begin, and what to do if the border continues to spread. Ask whether a wound, fungal infection, or abscess needs separate treatment and when a review is needed.

Questions people ask

Can focal cellulitis spread?

Yes. Redness, warmth, pain, and swelling can extend beyond the original area, which is why prompt assessment matters.

Should cellulitis be covered?

A clean, light dressing may protect an open wound, but a clinician should advise on drainage, dressings, and any underlying cause.
