Flu and headache: what should you know?

Flu often begins suddenly with feverishness, chills, muscle aches, tiredness, cough, and a headache. The pain may feel generalised or sit around the forehead and eyes. Fever and inflammatory chemicals can make pain receptors more sensitive; sweating, reduced drinking, and blocked nasal passages can add to the discomfort. A headache with flu symptoms does not identify the cause by itself. A Common Cold can overlap, while COVID-19 may also cause fever, headache, cough, or fatigue. Nasal pressure is more suggestive of sinus involvement when it persists or returns after an initial improvement; Chronic Sinusitis and Allergic Rhinitis can produce congestion and facial pressure without flu.

Rest, drink regularly, and choose light meals if your appetite is low. Keep the room comfortably cool and reduce bright light or screen use if these worsen the pain. Saline nasal rinsing may ease congestion when performed with safe, prepared water and clean equipment. A pharmacist or clinician can advise whether an appropriate fever or pain medicine fits your age, pregnancy status, medical conditions, and other medicines; follow the label and avoid doubling ingredients in combination cold products. Seek urgent help for a sudden explosive headache, confusion, fainting, a seizure, new weakness, trouble speaking, a stiff neck, or a new rash with fever. Get prompt medical advice for breathing difficulty, chest pain, persistent vomiting, inability to drink, severe eye pain, or a headache that is rapidly worsening. Contact a clinician if fever or headache is not settling, if you have a long-term condition or weakened immunity, or if symptoms follow recent travel and include marked body aches or unusual bleeding; Dengue Fever needs specific assessment and some pain medicines may be unsafe.

Ask whether your pattern fits flu or another infection, whether testing is useful, which pain relief is safe with your medicines, and what changes should trigger review. Mention the start of the headache, its location and severity, fever, hydration, travel, and any neurological symptoms.
