What should you know about flexible cystoscopy?

The clinician can look for irritation, bleeding points, stones, narrowing, or an unusual area inside the bladder and urethra. A cystoscopy may be suggested after blood in the urine, repeated urinary symptoms, or a scan that needs a closer view. It can also help assess changes linked with Bladder Cancer, but seeing an abnormal area does not by itself confirm a diagnosis.

You remain awake during many flexible examinations. The scope carries light and a camera; sterile fluid may be placed into the bladder so its walls can be seen clearly. If a tissue sample or another procedure is needed, the team will explain whether a different appointment or anaesthetic is required.

Follow the appointment instructions about eating, drinking, medicines, allergies, and medicines that affect bleeding. Tell the team about pregnancy possibility, urinary infection symptoms, or difficulty passing urine. Wear comfortable clothing and arrange practical support if sedation or another procedure has been planned.

During the examination, slow breathing can relax the pelvic muscles. Mild stinging when passing urine, urinary frequency, or a small amount of blood can occur afterwards. Drink fluids as advised, unless your clinician has restricted them, and follow the discharge instructions. Results may be discussed immediately, while samples or further tests can take longer.

Contact the clinic promptly if burning or bleeding is worsening, does not settle as expected, or you develop fever, chills, increasing lower-abdominal pain, cloudy or foul-smelling urine, or difficulty passing urine. Seek urgent help for severe pain, heavy bleeding, or inability to urinate.

Ask why the examination is recommended, what area needs checking, whether a sample might be taken, how you will receive the result, and which medicines should be paused or continued.
