What should you know about a flexible cystoscopy procedure?

Short answer

A flexible cystoscopy uses a thin camera passed through the urethra to inspect the bladder, usually with local anaesthetic, and it does not by itself confirm cancer.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

At a glance

Test
A flexible camera examines the urethra and bladder lining.
Anaesthetic
Numbing gel is commonly used for a flexible examination.

What the procedure involves

A clinician first discusses the reason for the examination and checks medicines, allergies and urinary symptoms. Numbing gel is placed in the urethra, then the flexible cystoscope is gently guided into the bladder. Sterile fluid may be used to fill the bladder so its lining can be seen. The clinician looks for inflammation, stones, bleeding areas or abnormal tissue. If a suspicious area is seen, a separate biopsy or treatment may be arranged rather than completed during a simple examination.

Preparing and recovering

Follow the clinic’s instructions about medicines and fluids, and tell the team if you have a urinary infection or feel unwell. You may be asked to provide a urine sample. Afterward, drink fluids if your clinician says this is suitable and expect temporary stinging or a small amount of blood in the urine. Take only the pain relief advised for you, and follow the discharge instructions about returning to normal activity.

When to seek care

Contact the clinic if burning, bleeding or urinary discomfort is worsening or does not settle as expected. Seek urgent care for inability to pass urine, heavy bleeding or clots, fever, chills, severe lower abdominal pain or feeling faint. These signs can indicate infection, obstruction or another complication that needs assessment.

Questions for your doctor

Ask why cystoscopy is recommended, whether you need to change any medicine, how long results will take, and whether a biopsy might be needed. Check who to contact if urinary symptoms appear after the examination.

Questions people ask

Is flexible cystoscopy the same as bladder cancer?

No. Cystoscopy is an examination. A diagnosis may require a biopsy and review of the findings.

Is blood in urine after cystoscopy expected?

A small amount can occur briefly, but heavy bleeding, clots, fever or difficulty passing urine requires prompt medical advice.
