What should you know about flank pain UTI symptoms?

A urinary tract infection may cause burning when passing urine, needing to urinate often, or pressure low in the abdomen. Flank pain, fever, chills, nausea, or feeling generally unwell can occur when infection involves the kidney; this is a presentation of [Kidney Infection](/conditions/kidney-infection/). A lower urinary infection does not explain every case of flank pain. [Kidney Stones](/conditions/kidney-stones/) can cause strong one-sided pain and blood in the urine, sometimes without burning. Muscle strain and other conditions can also produce pain in this area.

Arrange a medical assessment if flank pain occurs with burning urine, urinary frequency, fever, chills, or visible blood. A clinician may ask about the timing of symptoms, examine you, and request a urine sample. Drink normally unless a clinician has given you fluid restrictions, and follow prescribed treatment instructions. Do not use leftover antibiotics, because the right treatment depends on the suspected cause and your health history. Keep track of pain, temperature, urine changes, and vomiting.

Seek urgent care if flank pain is severe, fever is high or persistent, vomiting prevents fluids, you feel confused or faint, or you cannot pass urine. Prompt assessment is also needed during pregnancy, with one functioning kidney, or after a significant injury. Symptoms that continue without improvement should be reviewed even if urinary discomfort is mild.
