Fish oil and atrial fibrillation

Atrial fibrillation is an irregular heart rhythm that may feel like fluttering, pounding, or a fast heartbeat. Fish oil products differ in strength, ingredients, and reason for use, so the label matters. A supplement should not be assumed to prevent or treat an abnormal rhythm. If palpitations begin or change after starting fish oil, the timing is useful information but does not prove the supplement caused them. An Electrocardiogram can help identify the rhythm.

Tell your doctor or pharmacist the product name, dose, start date, and every other medicine or supplement you take. Do not start, stop, or change fish oil to manage a rhythm problem without advice. If you have atrial fibrillation, ask whether you need Anticoagulation Management; fish oil is not a substitute for prescribed stroke prevention. Keep a record of episodes, pulse readings if advised, alcohol intake, illness, and symptoms such as dizziness.

Call emergency services for palpitations with chest pain, severe breathlessness, fainting, new weakness on one side, trouble speaking, or sudden confusion. These can signal a dangerous rhythm or a Stroke. Seek prompt clinical advice for a new irregular heartbeat, episodes that last longer than usual, or worsening breathlessness, particularly with known Heart Failure.

Ask why fish oil is being used, whether the product is appropriate for you, whether your rhythm needs an ECG, and which symptoms require emergency action. Review interactions with blood thinners and your plan for monitoring episodes.
