First hair transplant: what to know

During a transplant, a clinician removes follicular units from a donor area and places them into carefully designed recipient sites. The aim is to improve coverage while preserving a natural hairline and enough donor hair for future needs. Male pattern hair loss and female pattern hair loss may be assessed differently. Traction alopecia can sometimes be considered when pulling has stopped and the scalp is suitable. Sudden loss, active scalp inflammation, or unexplained bald patches should be investigated before surgery.

Start with a diagnosis rather than choosing a technique from photographs. The consultation should review the pattern and duration of loss, family history, medicines, scalp examination, donor density, and whether medical treatment could slow ongoing thinning. Ask who performs each stage, how grafts are handled, and what the planned hairline will look like. PRP for hair loss may be discussed as a non-surgical or supportive option, while scalp micropigmentation can create the appearance of density without moving follicles. After surgery, follow wound-care instructions, avoid rubbing the grafts, and expect the visible change to develop gradually.

Contact the treating team if pain, swelling, bleeding, redness, warmth, or drainage is worsening, or if you develop fever. Seek assessment for sudden new bald patches, scarring, severe scalp pain, or rapid loss outside the expected recovery pattern. A transplant should be postponed until an active scalp condition has been addressed.
