Finger stiffness and locking: what to know

Short answer
Finger stiffness and locking can come from a tendon catching, joint inflammation, arthritis or tightening tissue, so the timing, location and triggers guide diagnosis.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.
At a glance
- Useful clues
- Timing, trigger, joint location and release
- Possible sources
- Tendon, joint or connective tissue
- Record
- Episodes, swelling and morning stiffness
What the pattern can suggest
A finger that catches or locks while bending may reflect Trigger Finger, where a tendon does not glide smoothly. Morning stiffness, tenderness or swelling around several hand joints can occur with Hand Osteoarthritis or Rheumatoid Arthritis, but symptoms overlap. A firm cord or gradual pull of a finger toward the palm can occur with Dupuytren's Contracture. Note which finger is involved, whether locking happens bent or straight, and whether gentle pressure releases it.
Practical next steps
Arrange an assessment if locking recurs, interferes with work or sleep, or limits grip. Until then, avoid repeatedly forcing the finger through a catch, reduce activities that provoke it, and keep a brief record of episodes, swelling and morning symptoms. A clinician may examine tendon glide, joint range, strength and sensation, and may recommend splinting, exercises, medicine or another treatment based on the cause. Gentle movement within comfort is preferable to forceful stretching.
When to seek urgent care
Seek urgent care if the finger becomes suddenly locked after an injury, looks deformed, turns pale or blue, becomes cold or numb, or has severe pain and rapidly increasing swelling. Fever, spreading redness or a wound with worsening tenderness also needs prompt assessment.
Questions for your doctor
Ask what structure seems to be catching, whether imaging is needed, which movements to avoid, whether a splint or hand therapy could help, and what change should prompt faster review.

Questions people ask
Is a locking finger always trigger finger?
No. Trigger Finger is one possible explanation; arthritis, inflammation, injury and tightening tissue can produce related symptoms.
Should I force a locked finger straight?
Avoid forceful movements because they can aggravate an irritated tendon or joint; seek assessment if the finger remains locked or episodes repeat.
