Finger skin graft: what to know

A graft is a piece of skin transferred from a donor site to a prepared wound. It may be considered after trauma, burns, removal of damaged tissue, or a wound that cannot close comfortably on its own. The graft does not bring its original blood supply; it must settle onto the wound bed and develop a new blood supply.

The surgeon may use a thin graft or a thicker graft depending on the wound's depth, location, movement, and need for durable coverage. A dressing, splint, or other support can limit rubbing and movement while the graft attaches. The donor site also needs dressings and careful observation.

Follow the surgical team's dressing instructions exactly and keep the covering dry unless they tell you otherwise. Elevate the hand when advised to help limit swelling. Avoid gripping, impact, soaking, smoking, and strenuous use until the team says the graft is secure. Do not lift a dressing to inspect the graft unless instructed, because disturbance can interrupt healing.

Take prescribed medicines as directed and attend dressing changes. Once movement exercises are approved, perform them gently; a hand therapist may help protect motion without pulling on the graft. Scar care should begin only when the wound is closed and the clinician recommends it.

Contact the surgical team promptly for increasing pain, spreading redness, foul-smelling drainage, fever, sudden bleeding, a dressing that becomes soaked, or a graft that looks loose, grey, black, or separated. Get urgent help if the finger becomes cold, blue, numb, severely swollen, or difficult to move. Do not wait for a routine review when circulation or infection seems concerning.

Ask why grafting is recommended, where the donor skin will come from, how long the finger should be protected, when work and driving may resume, and which movements are safe. Clarify dressing changes, pain control, scar care, and the signs that require a same-day call.
