What should you know about fibula tendonitis?

Short answer
Fibula tendonitis is irritation of tendons beside the fibula, causing outer ankle pain that often worsens with activity.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.
At a glance
- Typical area
- Outer ankle or lower leg beside the fibula
- Common trigger
- Repeated or suddenly increased loading
- Assessment
- Movement, strength, tenderness, and imaging when needed
What it means
The fibula is the slimmer bone on the outer side of the lower leg. Tendons running near it help control the foot and ankle. Repeated running, uneven ground, a sudden training change, or an ankle injury can overload these tissues. Pain may sit behind or below the outer ankle and can be tender when pressed. Swelling, stiffness, or discomfort when turning the foot outward may also occur. A clinician may compare both ankles, check strength and movement, and use imaging when a tear, fracture, or another cause needs clarification.
What you can do
Reduce the movement that reproduces pain while keeping gentle, comfortable ankle motion. Supportive footwear and a gradual return to walking or sport can reduce repeated strain. Physiotherapy can address ankle mobility, balance, calf strength, and the load that triggered symptoms; see Physiotherapy for an overview. A tailored strengthening plan may follow the irritable phase, and Strength Training Rehabilitation explains that approach. A clinician may discuss options such as Shockwave Therapy or PRP Injection when symptoms persist, but suitability depends on the examination and diagnosis. Muscle Soreness After Exercise can help distinguish ordinary post-activity soreness from a focal tendon problem.
When to seek care
Arrange an assessment if pain persists, limits normal walking, or returns whenever activity resumes. Seek prompt care after a snap, sudden loss of strength, marked swelling, inability to bear weight, or visible deformity. New numbness, a cold or pale foot, or rapidly increasing redness and warmth also needs urgent medical attention because these findings may indicate a problem beyond tendon irritation.
Questions for your doctor
Which tendon is involved, and how was that determined? Could an ankle sprain, fracture, or tendon tear explain the pain? Which activities should I pause, and what exercise can I safely start? When should I progress loading or return to sport?

Questions people ask
Is fibula tendonitis the same as muscle soreness?
No. Tendon pain is usually more localised near the outer ankle and is reproduced by specific loading, while ordinary muscle soreness is often more diffuse after unfamiliar exercise.
Can I keep exercising?
Choose activity that does not increase pain during exercise or leave a clear flare afterward, and ask a clinician to guide progression if symptoms continue.
