Fever seizure temperature: what to know

A fever seizure can happen during a febrile illness, and the temperature reading alone cannot predict whether a seizure will occur. During a seizure, a child may stiffen, jerk, lose awareness, roll their eyes, or become briefly unresponsive. The event can be brief, but the child still needs careful observation and medical advice, especially after a first seizure.

A fever may be linked to an infection, but the height of the reading does not by itself show the seriousness of the cause. Other explanations for a seizure include low blood glucose, medication or substance effects, and conditions affecting the brain such as meningitis. Note the temperature, how it was measured, and whether the child returned to normal afterward. These details help clinicians assess the episode.

Place the child on a safe surface, remove nearby hard objects, and turn them onto their side when possible. Loosen tight clothing around the neck and time the movements. Do not restrain them, put anything in their mouth, give food or drink, or try to cool them with cold water while the seizure is happening. Stay with the child and observe breathing after the movements stop.

Call emergency services if the seizure lasts longer than a few minutes, repeats without full recovery, affects breathing, causes injury, or the child remains difficult to wake. Get urgent help for a stiff neck, severe headache, unusual rash, persistent vomiting, marked weakness, or ongoing confusion. A first seizure with fever needs prompt medical assessment even when the child seems better afterward.

Ask what may have triggered the seizure, whether examination or tests are needed, how to record future episodes, and whether a rescue plan is appropriate. Bring the timing, temperature method, medicines, illness symptoms, and a description or video recorded from a safe distance.
