Fever with eye discharge: what to know

Discharge may be watery, sticky, or thick, and one or both eyes may be affected. Redness, irritation, swollen eyelids, or discomfort can accompany conjunctivitis, while itching and watery discharge may fit an allergic pattern. Fever suggests that an infection elsewhere or an infectious eye problem may be present, but the combination does not establish one diagnosis. Note when the fever began, the discharge colour and amount, whether the eye is painful, and whether vision is blurred.

Wash hands before and after touching the eye, gently clean discharge with clean water and a fresh pad, and avoid sharing towels, pillows, cosmetics, or eye drops. Do not wear contact lenses until symptoms have cleared and a clinician says they are safe. Stay hydrated and follow label directions for fever relief. A pharmacist or clinician can advise on treatment because some eye drops are unsuitable for certain causes.

Get urgent assessment for severe eye pain, light sensitivity, reduced or blurred vision, marked swelling around the eye, difficulty moving the eye, a bulging eye, or a severe headache with vomiting. Seek prompt advice for a newborn, a contact-lens wearer, an injury, chemical exposure, or symptoms that are worsening rather than settling. Emergency help is needed for breathing difficulty, facial swelling, or collapse.

Ask whether the eye needs examination or a swab, how to prevent spread at home, when contact lenses can be restarted, and which symptoms would mean treatment has not worked. Mention allergies, recent illness, and all eye products used.
