Fever and cough

Short answer
Fever and cough commonly occur together when the airways or lungs are inflamed, yet breathing difficulty, chest pain, confusion, or worsening illness requires urgent medical care.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

- Fluids, rest, clean air, and correctly labelled medicines.
What the combination can mean
A viral respiratory infection can irritate the throat and airways, producing a dry or mucus-producing cough alongside fever. Acute Bronchitis and Common Cold are possible explanations. Acid Reflux or Allergic Rhinitis can cause cough, but fever makes an infectious process more relevant to discuss.
Asthma may flare during an infection or after exposure to an irritant. A cough that continues beyond the initial illness has different possibilities, including Chronic Cough or Bronchiectasis. The presence of cough does not by itself identify a condition.
How to care for yourself
Rest, drink fluids, and avoid smoke or other airway irritants. Note the temperature, cough type, breathing effort, and whether mucus changes colour or amount. Follow the label for any fever medicine and check with a pharmacist if you take regular medicines or have liver, kidney, stomach, or bleeding problems.
Stay home from close contact while you feel unwell and consider testing or local health advice when infection precautions apply. Arrange a clinical review if symptoms are not improving, the cough is becoming harsher, or you have a condition affecting your lungs or immunity.
When to seek urgent care
Seek emergency care for severe difficulty breathing, blue or grey lips, new confusion, fainting, coughing blood, or chest pain that is severe or persistent. Urgent assessment is also needed if breathing becomes progressively harder or you cannot keep fluids down.
Questions to take to an appointment
Ask whether the pattern suggests an airway or lung infection, whether your chest needs examination, and which warning signs matter for you. Ask how to use any inhaler correctly and when a persistent cough should be reviewed again.

Questions people ask
Does fever with cough always mean a chest infection?
No. Viral upper-airway illness can cause both symptoms, while the pattern and examination help distinguish other causes.
When should a cough with fever be checked urgently?
Seek urgent help for severe breathing difficulty, blue or grey lips, confusion, fainting, coughing blood, or significant chest pain.
