What should you know about female hair loss blood tests?

Short answer

Female hair loss blood tests can look for treatable contributors such as iron deficiency, thyroid problems and nutritional or systemic illness.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

At a glance

Tests do
Look for medical contributors to shedding
Tests do not do
Identify the cause without history and examination

Why blood tests may be offered

The clinician will also ask about timing, family history, recent illness, weight change, periods, pregnancy, medicines and diet. Hair loss can have more than one contributor, so a blood result is interpreted alongside the scalp examination and the pattern of shedding.

What results may help explain

A full blood count and iron assessment may support evaluation for Anaemia. Depending on your history, testing may consider thyroid function, nutrient status, inflammation or organ function. Ongoing digestive symptoms, poor absorption or prolonged illness may prompt consideration of Coeliac Disease, Crohn's Disease or Chronic Kidney Disease. A result outside the usual range does not by itself prove that it caused the hair loss.

Preparing for assessment

Bring a list of medicines, supplements and recent health changes, including a high fever or major stress. Ask whether you need to fast; many blood tests do not require it, but instructions vary. Avoid starting high-dose supplements before discussing them because they can affect results or cause harm. Take photographs of the hair pattern over time if the change is gradual.

When to seek care

Arrange an appointment for sudden, patchy or rapidly worsening loss, scalp pain, scaling, sores or eyebrow loss. Seek prompt care if hair shedding occurs with severe fatigue, fainting, breathlessness, unexplained fever or marked weight change. Hair loss with a new medicine, pregnancy-related change or menstrual disturbance also deserves a clinical review.

Questions for your doctor

Ask which tests fit your pattern, whether iron and thyroid checks are needed, when results should be reviewed, and whether a scalp examination or dermatology referral would add information. Tell the clinician about restrictive eating, heavy periods, recent illness and family-pattern hair loss.

Questions people ask

Can a blood test find every cause of hair loss?

No. Pattern, scalp findings, medical history and medicines may be as important as laboratory results.

Should I stop supplements before testing?

Ask the clinician first; some supplements can affect results, and stopping prescribed treatment without advice is unsafe.
