Pitted Keratolysis on Feet: Signs and Care

How the structures involved in Pitted Keratolysis differ from normal

Short answer

Pitted keratolysis is a superficial bacterial infection that can create tiny depressions and strong odour on moist, sweaty soles.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

At a glance

Key clues
Tiny sole pits, softened skin, moisture and strong odour
Prevention focus
Dry feet, breathable footwear and prompt sock changes

Recognising the condition

The soles may show clusters of shallow pits, softened white skin or a glazed appearance. Odour can be prominent because moisture and bacteria interact in enclosed footwear. The condition commonly affects pressure-bearing areas, where sweating and friction keep the skin damp. It can resemble other causes of Body Odour, but visible pits on the sole are a useful clue.

The infection is superficial, yet untreated moisture can keep the cycle going. A clinician can distinguish it from eczema, a fungal problem or deeper infection by examining the skin.

Reducing moisture and treating it

Wash the feet gently and dry thoroughly, including between the toes. Rotate breathable shoes, change damp socks promptly and avoid wearing enclosed footwear for prolonged periods when possible. A clinician may prescribe Topical Antibiotic Therapy. Prescription Antiperspirant can help reduce sweating when moisture is a major trigger; use it only as directed, particularly if the skin is cracked or irritated.

When to seek care

Arrange a review when pits or odour persist despite careful drying, or when the skin becomes sore, cracked or increasingly tender. Seek prompt care for spreading redness, warmth, swelling, pus, fever or difficulty bearing weight. Recurrent episodes are a reason to discuss sweat control, footwear and possible sources of reinfection.

Questions for your doctor

Do the pits fit pitted keratolysis or another infection? Which topical treatment should I use, and how long? How can I control foot moisture without irritating the soles?

Questions people ask

Is pitted keratolysis caused by poor hygiene?

No. Moisture, sweating, enclosed footwear and skin conditions can allow the bacteria to multiply; careful drying supports treatment.

Can it come back?

Yes. Recurrence is more likely when feet remain damp, so sweat control and footwear changes may be part of care.
