Understanding the spots
Freckles are usually flat, tan-to-brown marks that become more noticeable after sun exposure and may fade when exposure decreases. The top of the foot can receive substantial sunlight in sandals or open shoes. Not every brown spot is a freckle: a mole, sun-related pigment, inflammation, or another lesion can look similar. A clinician assesses color, border, symmetry, evolution, and whether the mark is new.
