Feeling pain during ovulation: what to know

As an ovarian follicle releases an egg, nearby tissues can produce a one-sided lower-abdominal ache, pressure, or brief sharper pain. It may occur near the middle of the cycle and settle without treatment. However, endometriosis and ovarian cysts can also cause pain in the pelvis. A calendar pattern can be useful information, but it cannot by itself distinguish normal ovulation discomfort from another problem.

Keep a cycle and symptom diary, including pain location, severity, duration, bleeding, discharge, nausea, and any effect on urination or bowel movements. Try a warm bath or heat pack and reduce strenuous activity if movement aggravates the ache. Use only pain relief that is safe for your health circumstances. If pain returns often or disrupts intimacy, exercise, sleep, or work, arrange a clinical review.

Get urgent help for abrupt severe pain, fainting, fever, heavy bleeding, persistent vomiting, or severe tenderness. Possible pregnancy changes the threshold for assessment: pain with bleeding, dizziness, or shoulder-tip pain may require urgent care. Seek a routine appointment when pain is new, lasts longer than expected, becomes more frequent, or no longer follows your usual pattern.

Ask what other causes fit your symptoms, whether testing is needed, and which treatments are suitable if the pain recurs. Bring your cycle record and mention medicines, contraception, pregnancy possibility, prior surgery, and any known pelvic conditions.
