Feeling needles in your hands: what it can mean

Pins and needles can occur briefly after sleeping on an arm or keeping a wrist bent. Persistent symptoms may reflect Peripheral Neuropathy, which affects nerves outside the brain and spinal cord. Type 2 Diabetes can damage nerves over time, while Vitamin B12 Deficiency and Hypothyroidism may also contribute to altered sensation. Fast breathing during Generalised Anxiety Disorder or Panic Disorder can cause tingling around the hands or mouth. A Stroke or Transient Ischaemic Attack may present with sudden one-sided numbness, especially with weakness, facial drooping, speech trouble, or vision change. The symptom alone does not establish its cause.

Change position, gently move your fingers and wrist, and notice whether the feeling settles. Protect numb skin from hot surfaces, sharp objects, and pressure because reduced sensation can hide injury. Note whether one or both hands are affected, where the sensation starts, what brings it on, and whether weakness or neck pain occurs. Book a clinical review if it keeps returning, lasts, spreads, or affects sleep or grip.

Call emergency services immediately for sudden numbness or weakness on one side, facial drooping, difficulty speaking, severe dizziness, loss of balance, or a sudden severe headache. Seek prompt care for rapidly worsening symptoms, loss of hand function, or numbness after a serious injury. Do not drive yourself if stroke-like symptoms are present, even if they improve.

Ask whether your medicines, blood glucose, thyroid function, vitamin levels, neck, or wrist nerves could be involved and whether nerve testing is appropriate.
