Fatigue at work: what to know

Short answer
Fatigue at work can result from poor sleep, sustained demands, health problems, or an unsafe routine, so look for patterns and protect safety.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

Why work may expose the problem
Long shifts, rotating schedules, emotionally demanding work, heat, dehydration, repetitive tasks, and limited breaks can all drain concentration. Tiredness that is present outside work may point toward sleep difficulty, anaemia, infection, burnout, or another condition. Alcohol can worsen sleep quality even when it makes falling asleep easier. A work-only pattern may still reflect lighting, noise, posture, workload, or commuting rather than a personal failing.
Steps during the working day
Record when fatigue starts, what task you are doing, sleep the night before, meals, fluids, and any medicines. Take permitted breaks, drink regularly, eat a balanced meal, and change position during prolonged sitting or standing. Do not drive, climb, operate machinery, or make safety-critical decisions when you are struggling to stay alert. Discuss practical adjustments with a supervisor or occupational-health service, and arrange primary-care advice if the pattern persists.
When to seek care promptly
Get urgent help for fainting, new confusion, chest pain, severe breathlessness, sudden weakness, or a serious workplace accident. Seek medical review when fatigue is worsening, occurs after adequate rest, comes with fever, weight change, heavy bleeding, or low mood, or prevents safe travel and normal duties.
Questions for your doctor
Could my work schedule be aggravating a health issue? Should we assess sleep, blood counts, mood, hydration, or medicines? What warning signs mean I should stop a task and seek help?
