What should you know about fatigue and sweating?

Short answer
Fatigue with sweating can follow heat, exertion, infection, stress, medicine effects, or dehydration, but unexplained or heavy sweating needs medical assessment.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.
At a glance
- Record
- Timing, heat or exertion, fever, night episodes, medicines, fluids, and associated symptoms
- Immediate priority
- Cool down and replace fluids when heat or fluid loss may be involved
Possible explanations
Sweating cools the body during heat or exercise, and tiredness afterwards may be expected. Sweating with fever, chills, cough, sore throat, or body aches can occur with an infection such as COVID-19. Fluid loss may cause thirst, dry mouth, headache, dizziness, dark urine, and weakness. Anxiety, poor sleep, alcohol withdrawal, some medicines, hormonal changes, and low blood sugar can also produce sweating and fatigue. Anaemia, kidney disease, burnout, or chronic fatigue syndrome may explain ongoing tiredness but do not account for every episode of sweating. The combination does not identify one diagnosis.
What to do
Move to a cool place, loosen tight clothing, rest, and replace fluids gradually. Avoid strenuous activity until you feel recovered. Record when sweating occurs, whether it is during sleep, your temperature if you feel feverish, food and fluid intake, medicines, alcohol use, and any weight or appetite change. Do not stop prescribed medicine suddenly. Arrange a medical review if episodes recur without an obvious trigger, soak sleepwear or bedding, or are accompanied by ongoing fatigue.
When to seek care
Call emergency services for chest pain, severe breathlessness, fainting, confusion, seizure, severe weakness, or signs of heat illness. Seek prompt care for persistent vomiting, inability to drink, a high fever, severe dizziness, or new palpitations. A clinician may check hydration, temperature, blood pressure, medicines, and blood tests based on your history.
Questions for your doctor
Could an infection, dehydration, medicine, blood sugar change, or another condition explain this pattern? Do I need blood tests? Does night sweating alter the assessment? How much fluid and activity are appropriate while I recover?
