What should you know about fasciotomy arm?

Muscles, nerves, and blood vessels in the arm sit within spaces surrounded by firm tissue. Swelling from an injury, fracture, bleeding, or another cause can raise pressure inside that space. A surgeon makes an incision through the restricting covering so the contents have room to expand. The wound may be left open temporarily, then closed later or managed with staged wound care, depending on swelling and tissue condition.

The operation is time-sensitive because prolonged pressure can injure nerves and muscle. The exact incision, anaesthetic, wound plan, and need for later procedures depend on the affected compartment and the cause.

Keep the dressing and wound instructions exactly as provided, and attend planned checks. Elevate the arm only as advised, because positioning must support swelling control without compromising circulation. Do not remove dressings or put weight through the arm until the surgical team allows it. Hand, wrist, elbow, and shoulder exercises are introduced at a safe stage to limit stiffness and restore function. Pain, swelling, sensation, and finger movement should be monitored.

Seek urgent assessment for rapidly worsening pain, a dressing that feels increasingly tight, new numbness or weakness, inability to move the fingers, unusual paleness or coolness, heavy bleeding, fever, or drainage with a concerning smell. These changes can signal pressure, circulation problems, infection, or a wound complication.

Ask which arm compartments were released, how the wound will be managed, when movement and lifting can begin, and which changes require immediate contact. Ask how physiotherapy will address scar care, strength, sensation, and return to daily tasks.
