What should you know about familial acanthosis nigricans?

The colour and texture often appear on the neck, underarms, groin, or other creases. The skin may feel slightly rough or plush rather than simply looking darker. Familial cases can begin in childhood or adolescence and may affect several relatives. This pattern is different from a stain caused by dirt; washing harder will not remove it. A clinician may examine the areas and ask when they began, which relatives have similar markings, and whether medicines or other health changes are present.

Use a gentle cleanser and moisturiser, and reduce rubbing from tight collars, straps, or clothing. Do not scrub, bleach, or apply strong lightening products without advice. If appearance is a concern, a dermatologist can discuss options such as topical retinoids, chemical peels, or laser toning after considering your skin tone and the risk of irritation or uneven pigmentation. These treatments address appearance and texture; they do not change the inherited tendency.

Arrange a clinical assessment if the patches are new, changing quickly, widespread, very itchy, painful, or associated with other symptoms. Seek prompt care for sudden extensive darkening or swelling. A family pattern can be useful information, but it does not replace an examination because similar-looking dark patches have other causes.
