What should you know about face threading face lift?

Short answer
A face-threading facelift, usually called a thread lift, uses dissolvable threads under the skin to gently reposition lax tissue and encourage collagen support; it offers a temporary lift rather than the reshaping achieved by surgery.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

- Main aim
- Gently reposition selected lax facial tissue

- Bruising, swelling, tenderness, and tightness may occur
- Result
- Temporary and influenced by tissue laxity and thread placement
What the treatment involves
During a thread lift, a clinician places fine threads through small entry points, commonly around the cheeks, jawline, brows, or neck. The threads can provide an immediate change in the position of selected tissues, while the healing response around them may add gradual firmness. Polydioxanone thread is one material used for this purpose. You can read more about [Polydioxanone Thread](/materials/polydioxanone-thread/).
The result depends on skin laxity, tissue weight, thread design, placement, and the clinician’s technique. It may soften early sagging skin, but it does not remove excess skin or reproduce the deeper tissue changes of a surgical facelift. Marked sun-damaged skin, sometimes called [Sun-Damaged Skin](/conditions/photoaging/), and substantial laxity may affect the result.
How to prepare and recover
At a consultation, discuss your goals, previous procedures, medicines, allergies, bleeding or healing problems, and any active skin infection. The clinician should examine your face at rest and with movement and explain where the threads will be placed. Ask which material is planned and what degree of lifting is realistic.
Swelling, bruising, tenderness, tightness, or temporary asymmetry can occur after placement. Follow the practice’s instructions about cleansing, facial movement, sleeping position, exercise, and review appointments. Avoid pressing or massaging treated areas unless your clinician specifically advises it. Improvement can change as swelling settles, and threads gradually dissolve; the duration varies between people.
When to seek medical care
Contact the treating clinic promptly if pain is worsening rather than settling, redness or warmth is spreading, swelling is increasing, discharge appears, or you develop fever. Seek urgent medical attention for trouble breathing, severe allergic symptoms, new weakness, or a sudden change in vision. A thread that becomes visible, protrudes, or causes persistent dimpling also needs assessment; do not pull or cut it yourself.
Questions for your doctor
Ask: What area are you treating, and what change should I reasonably expect? Which thread material and placement method will you use? What are the warning signs of infection, nerve irritation, or thread displacement? When can I return to work, exercise, and skincare? What alternatives fit my anatomy, such as [HIFU Skin Lifting](/treatments/laser-and-energy/hifu-treatment/) or a [Facelift](/treatments/surgical-dermatology/facelift/)?

Questions people ask
Is a thread lift the same as a surgical facelift?
No. A thread lift uses placed dissolvable threads and does not remove excess skin. A surgical facelift changes deeper tissues and skin, so the procedures have different recovery, risks, and potential results.
Can a thread lift treat sagging skin?
It may improve selected areas of early or moderate laxity. The amount of change depends on the tissue being treated, skin quality, thread placement, and your healing response.
What should I do if a thread is visible?
Contact the treating clinic for an examination. Do not pull, trim, or manipulate the thread yourself, because this can worsen tissue injury or introduce infection.
