Face Puffiness

Puffiness on both sides after sleep may differ from swelling that appears suddenly on one side. Itching or raised wheals can accompany hives, while deeper swelling of the lips, eyelids, or face can occur with angioedema. Warmth, tenderness, redness, and feeling unwell raise concern for cellulitis. A recent cosmetic, food, medicine, insect bite, dental issue, or skin injury can provide useful context, but appearance alone cannot identify the cause.

Note when the swelling began, where it is, and whether it is itchy, painful, warm, or changing. Pause a newly introduced cosmetic and wash gently without rubbing. A cool compress may ease discomfort. Do not squeeze the area or apply leftover prescription creams. Photographing the change and listing recent medicines, foods, products, and bites can help a clinician assess the episode.

Get emergency help for swelling of the tongue or throat, breathing difficulty, wheezing, dizziness, or faintness. Seek prompt medical review for rapidly increasing swelling, eye involvement, severe pain, marked warmth, fever, or a spreading red area. Recurrent or unexplained puffiness also deserves assessment.
