Eyelid melanoma treatment: what to expect

The team considers the melanoma's location, depth, margins, eyelid structures and whether it has spread. A biopsy identifies the tumour type and helps guide the next decision. Local treatment may involve Surgical Excision, Skin Cancer Surgery or Tumour Removal Surgery. Some people need additional staging, including a Sentinel Lymph Node Biopsy. The aim is to remove cancer while preserving eyelid closure, comfort and vision as far as possible.

Ask whether a dermatologist, ophthalmologist, reconstructive surgeon and oncology team will be involved. Before surgery, discuss wound care, eyelash changes, eyelid movement and possible reconstruction. If melanoma has spread or carries a high risk of returning, the team may discuss Immunotherapy. Do not start or stop treatment based on an image or a general online description; the pathology report determines the relevant options.

Contact the treating team promptly for increasing redness, discharge, fever, worsening swelling, uncontrolled bleeding or a wound that opens. Urgent eye care is needed for new vision loss, severe pain, inability to close the eye or sudden marked swelling. After treatment, new lumps, changing skin marks, persistent headaches, weakness or confusion should be reported; severe neurological symptoms require emergency care.

Ask what the pathology shows, whether the margins are clear, what stage has been assigned, and why a particular operation or additional treatment is recommended. Ask how follow-up will examine the eyelid, nearby lymph nodes and overall health, and whom to contact between appointments.
