What should you know about eyelid hyperpigmentation?

Short answer

Eyelid hyperpigmentation is increased skin colour around the eyes that can follow sun exposure, irritation, inflammation, or inherited pigmentation patterns.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

Identify and control the cause before targeting colour

Understanding the darkening

Pigment may become more noticeable after repeated rubbing, dermatitis, healing from irritation, or ultraviolet exposure. It can affect the upper lids, lower lids, or the surrounding skin, and may appear brown, grey-brown, or deeper depending on natural skin tone and the depth of pigment. Dark patches on skin can have several explanations, so colour alone cannot identify the cause.

A clinician may ask when the change began, whether it itches or scales, what products touch the area, and whether pigmentation occurs elsewhere. New one-sided change, a changing spot, or pigment involving the eye itself deserves examination rather than cosmetic treatment first.

Protect and treat the skin carefully

Use gentle cleansing, avoid rubbing, and stop products that sting or cause rash. Protect the surrounding face from ultraviolet exposure with sunglasses, shade, and a suitable sunscreen; apply carefully and keep it out of the eyes. Treating an underlying irritation is often necessary before pigment-focused care can be considered.

Depending on the cause and skin type, a dermatologist may discuss skin brightening treatment, a carefully selected chemical peel, IPL photofacial, picosecond laser treatment, or topical hydroquinone treatment. Eyelid skin is thin and easily irritated, so product strength, placement, and aftercare require professional direction. Do not use household bleaching products or unprescribed lightening creams.

When to seek care

Arrange a review for rapidly changing, itchy, scaly, bleeding, crusted, or one-sided pigmentation, or when the colour extends onto the eye surface. Seek urgent care for sudden swelling with vision change or severe eye pain. A clinician can separate benign pigmentation from a problem needing different treatment.

Questions for your doctor

Ask what type of pigmentation is present, whether irritation is maintaining it, which eye-area products are safe, and how your skin tone affects treatment choice. Discuss the risk of temporary irritation or darker pigmentation after procedures and the plan for sun protection.

Questions people ask

Can rubbing make eyelid pigmentation darker?

Yes. Repeated friction and inflammation can stimulate or maintain darker colour in delicate eyelid skin.

Can I use a lightening cream near my eyes?

Use only a product prescribed or specifically approved for that area; many active ingredients can irritate the eyelids.
