Eyebrow dandruff: what should you know?

Fine white or yellowish scale can appear where the brows meet the forehead, eyelids, nose, or scalp. Dandruff and seborrheic dermatitis can affect several oilier areas at once. Irritation from cosmetics, cleansers, hair products, or frequent rubbing may also create scaling. Itching, redness, tenderness, crusting, or loss of brow hairs gives a clinician useful clues.

Wash the area gently with lukewarm water and a fragrance-free cleanser, then pat dry. Do not scrape the scale or use harsh exfoliants close to the eyes. Keep brow tools clean and pause new cosmetics until the skin settles. A clinician may suggest carefully selected medicated shampoo or a topical antifungal treatment, with instructions that protect the eyelids.

Arrange a dermatology review if flaking persists, spreads, repeatedly returns, or is accompanied by marked redness, pain, swelling, pus, bleeding, or noticeable brow-hair loss. Seek prompt care for eye pain, vision changes, or swelling that affects the eye.
