What should you know about eye perioral dermatitis?

The rash may sit around the eyes, nose or mouth while leaving a narrow border next to the lip itself. The skin can feel tight, sensitive, scaly or warm, and the bumps may resemble acne. It is not the same as ordinary pimples, although the appearance can overlap. Strong skincare products, fragranced cosmetics and steroid creams may aggravate facial irritation; do not stop a prescribed medicine without advice.

Pause new or irritating products and cleanse gently with lukewarm water. Avoid rubbing, picking and heavy occlusive creams near the eyes. A clinician may recommend a topical medicine such as topical antibiotic therapy, or another treatment based on the rash and its location. Oral antibiotics for acne are not interchangeable with a clinician’s plan. Topical corticosteroids can sometimes worsen this rash, so use them around the eyes only when specifically directed.

Arrange a dermatology or primary-care assessment if the rash persists, spreads, returns after treatment or affects the eyelids. Seek urgent care for eye pain, vision change, marked swelling, pus, fever or rapidly worsening redness. These features may point to eye involvement or infection rather than an uncomplicated facial rash.

Ask whether the rash fits perioral dermatitis, which products or medicines could be contributing, and which treatment is suitable for the thin eyelid skin. Mention any steroid, inhaler, cosmetic or dental product used before the flare.
