Eye liquid discharge: what to know

Tears protect the eye, so extra watery fluid can follow wind, dust, smoke, dryness, or an allergic reaction. Allergy often brings itching and affects both eyes. Conjunctivitis may cause watering, redness, gritty discomfort, or discharge that collects on the lashes. Clear mucus can also appear when the eye surface is irritated. Colour and texture provide clues but cannot identify the cause by themselves. A blocked tear duct, eyelid inflammation, or a foreign particle may also produce discharge, particularly if one eye is affected or symptoms keep returning.

Wash your hands before and after touching the eye. Gently clean the lashes with clean lukewarm water and a fresh pad for each eye; do not scrape crusts away. Avoid rubbing, eye makeup, shared towels, and contact lenses until discomfort and discharge have settled or a clinician advises otherwise. Do not use another person’s drops or leftover antibiotics. If allergy is suspected, limit exposure to the trigger and ask a pharmacist about suitable relief, especially if you take other medicines.

Seek prompt assessment for eye pain, light sensitivity, reduced vision, marked swelling, injury, or a very red eye. A contact-lens wearer with discharge, pain, or blurred vision should be seen urgently. Get medical advice if symptoms are worsening, do not settle, or keep returning. Fever or feeling significantly unwell adds urgency, particularly when redness or swelling spreads around the eye.

Does the discharge look more consistent with allergy, irritation, or conjunctivitis? Should I stop contact lenses or makeup? Do people close to me need hygiene precautions, and what change in vision or pain means I should return urgently?
