What should you know about eye keloid?

Keloids form when healing tissue produces more scar material than the wound needs. They can follow acne, piercing, surgery, burns, or a minor scratch. A keloid may be firm, smooth, shiny, darker or lighter than nearby skin, and it can continue enlarging after the original wound has closed. A lump beside the eye is not automatically a keloid; other skin lumps can look similar, so examination matters.

Because the eyelid moves and the eye surface is sensitive, do not squeeze, cut, or apply unprescribed products to the area.

Arrange a dermatology assessment, especially if the scar is growing, rubbing against the eye, or changing colour. Treatment may include an intralesional steroid injection, laser approaches, cryotherapy, or carefully planned excision. Keloids can return after removal, so your clinician may combine methods and schedule follow-up. Protect healed skin from sun and avoid repeated friction or picking.

Seek prompt medical attention for new vision changes, eye pain, marked redness, swelling that is rapidly worsening, pus, fever, bleeding, or a lesion that changes quickly. Urgent assessment is also appropriate if swelling prevents the eyelid from closing or the eye feels scratched.

Ask whether the appearance fits a keloid, whether the eye itself is involved, which treatment is safest for the eyelid, how recurrence will be reduced, and what symptoms should trigger an earlier review.
