Eye discharge while sleeping: what it can mean

A small amount of crust or mucus after sleep can be normal, but persistent or changing eye discharge deserves assessment. Tears and natural oils continue to protect the eye while you sleep, and material can collect at the eyelid edges. Notice whether the discharge is in one eye or both and whether it returns during the day.

Clear or lightly whitish material may reflect normal overnight build-up, dryness, or irritation. Itching and watery eyes can occur with Allergic Conjunctivitis. Sticky discharge with eyelid swelling, irritation, or eyes that become stuck together may occur with Conjunctivitis. A blocked tear drainage channel can also leave tears and debris near the inner corner. The appearance alone cannot identify the cause.

Wash your hands before touching the area. Soften crust with clean cotton wool or a warm, clean damp cloth, wiping from the inner corner outward and using a fresh part for each wipe. Do not share towels, eye makeup, or pillowcases. Avoid contact lenses and eye makeup while the eye is irritated. Do not use leftover or someone else’s eye drops; a pharmacist or clinician can advise which product is appropriate.

Arrange a medical review if discharge keeps returning, becomes thick or coloured, or comes with marked itching, swelling, or discomfort. Seek urgent care for severe eye pain, light sensitivity, a sudden change in vision, an eye injury, or swelling around the eye with fever. Contact-lens wearers should seek prompt advice for a painful or unusually red eye.

Ask what the colour and texture suggest, whether both eyes are involved, and whether you should pause contact lenses. Bring the name of any drops or creams you have used and describe when the discharge first appears.
