What should you know about eye discharge when waking up?

During sleep, blinking stops and tears and mucus may gather along the lashes. This can leave light crusting that clears after washing. Discharge that is thick, frequent, or present later in the day deserves closer attention. Itching and watering are common presentations of Allergic Conjunctivitis. Conjunctivitis may bring redness, irritation, and sticky material. One-sided watering can also relate to tear drainage. Clean your hands first. Hold a clean warm compress over closed eyes to loosen material, then wipe along the lashes without pressing on the eyeball. Use a separate clean pad for each eye. Avoid rubbing, sharing towels, and applying eye makeup. Remove contact lenses and do not put them back while the eye is irritated or discharging. Keep track of triggers, duration, and whether symptoms occur in one or both eyes; this information helps a clinician distinguish among possible causes.

Arrange prompt assessment for pain, light sensitivity, vision change, significant swelling, or discharge following an injury. If you wear contact lenses, pain or worsening redness calls for urgent advice. Seek review when the problem continues, returns often, or makes the eyelids difficult to open. Emergency services are needed for sudden vision loss or severe eye trauma.
