Short answer

Extreme stretch marks are usually wide or numerous stretch lines that deserve an assessment when they appear suddenly, change rapidly, or occur with other body changes.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

What extreme stretch marks can mean

Stretch marks, also called striae, form when deeper skin layers are stretched faster than the supporting tissue can adapt. They may begin pink, red, purple or brown and later become lighter, softer and slightly indented. Common areas include the abdomen, hips, breasts, thighs, buttocks and upper arms. Growth, pregnancy, muscle gain and weight change can all contribute. Long-term or strong corticosteroid use, including some creams or medicines, can also make them more likely. The marks themselves are not contagious, and their severity does not measure your general health.

A clinician may look at the pattern, timing and colour, then ask about medicines and recent changes in your body. Sudden extensive marks alongside easy bruising, muscle weakness, facial changes or unusual weight change need a broader medical review.

Options for improving their appearance

Keep the skin moisturised for comfort, but understand that moisturiser does not reliably remove established marks. A dermatologist can discuss whether topical treatment, microneedling, RF microneedling, fractional laser treatment or carboxytherapy fits your skin tone, mark stage and expectations. Procedures often need a course of sessions, and temporary redness, swelling or pigment changes are possible. Avoid treating irritated or infected skin until it has settled.

When to arrange medical care

Book a dermatology assessment if marks spread quickly, appear without an obvious stretch-related trigger, or are accompanied by easy bruising, weakness, persistent pain or other noticeable body changes. Seek prompt care for severe skin pain, warmth, drainage or fever, which may point to a separate skin problem rather than ordinary stretch marks.

Questions for your doctor

Ask what may have triggered the marks, whether any medicine could be contributing, which procedure suits your skin tone, how many visits may be needed, and what aftercare or pigment risk to expect.

Questions people ask

Can creams remove stretch marks?

Moisturisers can reduce dryness and itch, while prescription products may help selected early marks; established lines generally need realistic expectations.
