Extreme snoring

Short answer
Extreme snoring can result from narrowed upper airways and should be assessed when breathing pauses or daytime symptoms occur.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

Why snoring can become loud
Snoring happens when relaxed tissues in the nose, mouth or throat vibrate as air moves during sleep. Nasal blockage from allergic rhinitis or chronic sinusitis can encourage mouth breathing. Alcohol or sedating medicines near bedtime may worsen airway relaxation. Body weight can also affect airway narrowing, but snoring has several possible causes. Obstructive sleep apnoea should be considered when a bed partner notices pauses, gasping or choking, or when sleep is unrefreshing and daytime concentration is poor.
Steps that may help
Keep a sleep and symptom record, including reports from anyone who hears your breathing. Treat nasal congestion with advice from a pharmacist or clinician, and avoid alcohol close to bedtime. Side sleeping may reduce snoring for some people. Review medicines that cause drowsiness with a professional rather than stopping prescribed treatment yourself. If weight is contributing, a structured weight-management programme may be discussed as part of broader care.
When to seek care
Arrange a medical assessment if snoring is loud most nights, has recently changed, or is accompanied by witnessed breathing pauses, choking, morning headaches, high blood pressure or marked daytime sleepiness. Do not drive or operate machinery when you are struggling to stay awake. Seek urgent help for severe breathing difficulty while awake, chest pain, fainting or new confusion.
Questions for your doctor
Ask: Could obstructive sleep apnoea explain my symptoms? Would a sleep assessment help? Is nasal blockage contributing? Could any medicine or alcohol be worsening the snoring? Which weight or airway options fit my health?

Questions people ask
Is loud snoring always sleep apnoea?
No. Snoring has several causes, but pauses, gasping and daytime sleepiness make assessment especially important.
Can nasal congestion worsen snoring?
Yes. Blocked nasal passages can promote mouth breathing and contribute to airway vibration during sleep.
