Short answer

Extreme fatigue with no appetite can follow infection, emotional strain, dehydration, or an underlying condition and needs attention if it persists.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

At a glance

Try first
Small frequent fluids and meals that are easy to tolerate.
Arrange review
If fatigue limits activity or appetite does not return.

Reasons appetite may fall

COVID-19 and other illnesses can temporarily alter appetite and energy. Dehydration may make eating and drinking harder, while anaemia can leave someone drained and short of breath. Coeliac disease can affect digestion and nutrient absorption. Kidney disease may cause nausea, appetite changes, and tiredness. Burnout and alcohol-related illness can affect eating patterns and daily functioning. Chronic fatigue syndrome may involve severe, persistent exhaustion with limited tolerance for activity. These possibilities cannot be separated by appetite loss alone.

Support your body

Take regular small sips of fluid and choose small portions of easy-to-tolerate foods, adding nourishing options as appetite returns. Note weight changes, bowel symptoms, fever, nausea, pain, sleep, mood, alcohol use, and medicines. Book a medical review if reduced appetite lasts, fatigue limits normal activities, or you cannot maintain fluids or nutrition. A clinician can examine you and decide whether testing is needed.

Warning signs

Get urgent care for confusion, fainting, severe weakness, breathing difficulty, chest pain, severe abdominal pain, blood in vomit or stool, very little urine, or inability to drink. Prompt assessment is also sensible when appetite loss is accompanied by persistent vomiting, fever, or rapid deterioration.

Questions to ask

Could an infection, anaemia, dehydration, digestive problem, medicine, or mood change explain this? How can I protect my nutrition? Which symptoms would mean I should return sooner?
