What should you know about extensive bronchiectasis?

Damaged airways can collect mucus instead of moving it out efficiently. This may lead to a long-lasting cough, repeated chest infections, breathlessness or coughing up phlegm. The extent seen on imaging does not describe every part of your day-to-day experience; symptoms, lung function and infection history also guide decisions.

Assessment may include a chest scan, a Chest X-Ray, sputum testing and Spirometry. Clinicians may look for previous infections, immune problems or other conditions that could have contributed.

Learn the airway-clearance technique recommended for you and practise it consistently. Drink fluids as advised, keep vaccinations up to date, avoid tobacco smoke and attend reviews even when symptoms are quiet. A flare may need a sputum sample and treatment chosen for the suspected infection.

Get urgent medical help if you are struggling to breathe, become unusually drowsy or confused, or cough up more than a small amount of blood. A sudden decline, chest pain or a high fever also warrants prompt assessment.
