Short answer

Type 2 diabetes is a long-term condition in which insulin works less effectively, raising blood glucose and requiring ongoing care.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

At a glance

Main problem
Insulin resistance and high blood glucose
Possible symptoms
Thirst, urination, tiredness or none
Monitoring
Glucose, eyes, feet and kidneys

What changes in the body

Insulin helps move glucose from the bloodstream into cells for energy. In type 2 diabetes, cells respond less well to insulin and the pancreas may not make enough to compensate. High glucose can develop gradually, so some people have thirst, frequent urination, tiredness, blurred vision or recurrent infections, while others have no clear symptoms.

Over time, uncontrolled glucose can damage blood vessels and nerves. This can contribute to kidney disease, peripheral neuropathy, circulation problems, heart disease and stroke. Regular reviews help identify changes early.

Managing it day to day

Your care plan may combine food choices, regular movement, weight-related support, glucose checks and prescribed medicine. Take medicines as directed and keep appointments for blood pressure, cholesterol, kidney, eye and foot checks. Learn the symptoms of low glucose if your treatment can cause it, and carry the advice or treatment your clinician has given you. Do not change doses without guidance.

When to seek care

Contact your diabetes team if readings stay outside your agreed range, you are vomiting, cannot keep fluids down, or have a new foot wound, spreading redness or fever. Seek urgent help for confusion, fainting, severe weakness, breathing difficulty, or very high glucose with dehydration symptoms. Sudden facial weakness, speech trouble or one-sided weakness needs emergency care.

Questions for your doctor

Ask what your glucose targets are, how often to check, which symptoms need same-day help, and how illness changes your medicines. Request a review of foot, eye and kidney monitoring, and ask what support would make your activity and meal plan realistic.
